Further Information

Hilda Rix Nicholas travelled to Tangiers in Morocco in 1912 and again in 1914, painting en plein air in the soko, the outdoor marketplace, capturing the vibrant colour and movement, the people and the architecture. The 'exotic' appeal of Oriental art at the time, particularly in France, saw her paintings and drawings acclaimed, with the Musee du Luxembourg acquiring her work and an invitation to exhibit with the Societe des Peintres Orientalistes Francais. Hilda drew and painted with an honesty, inspired by what she saw in front of her, combined with her skill of drawing and sketching quickly from life. Her Moroccan works exhibit a liveliness and strong use of colour. A review of her exhibition in Paris in 1912, including a number of Moroccan works on paper was well received "The coloured pencil drawings of Miss Hilda Rix bear witness to gifts of lively observation and a remarkable aptitude to translate the character of the people and the vividness of their costumes." They were described as ingenious and expressive. (See Travers, The Life of Hilda Rix Nicholas, Thames and Hudson 2021, p. 72)
